Reality Tv
Wilipedias definition:
Reality television is a genre of television programming that presents purportedly unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, documents actual events, and usually features ordinary people instead of professional actors, sometimes in a contest or other situation where a prize is awarded.[1] The genre, which has existed in some form or another since the early years of television programming, exploded as a phenomenon around 1999–2000 with the success of such television series such as Big Brother and Survivor.[1] Programs in the reality television genre are commonly called reality shows and often are produced in a television series. Documentaries and nonfictional programming such as television news and sports television shows are usually not classified as reality shows.
The genre covers a wide range of television programming formats, from game show or quiz shows which resemble the frantic, often demeaning Japanese variety show shows produced in Japan in the 1980s and 1990s (such as Gaki no tsukai), to surveillance- or voyeurism-focused productions such as Big Brother.[1]
Reality television frequently portrays a modified and highly influenced form of reality, at times utilizing sensationalism to attract audience viewers and increase advertisingrevenue profits.[2][3][4] Participants are often placed in exotic locations or abnormal situations,[1] and are often persuaded to act in specific scripted ways by off-screen "story editors" or "segment television producers", with the portrayal of events and speech manipulated and contrived to create an illusion of reality through direction and post-production editing techniques.

Some have claimed that the success of reality TV is due to its ability to provide schadenfreude, by satisfying the desire of viewers to see others humiliated. American magazine ‘Entertainment Weekly’wrote, "Do we watch reality television for precious insight into the human condition? Please. We watch for those awkward scenes that make us feel a smidge better about our own little unfilmed lives."
Media analyst Tom Alderman wrote, "There is a sub-set of Reality TV that can only be described as Shame TV because it uses humiliation as its core appeal."
Reality TV is the most unreal anyway. It only has people who don't pretend to be characters, but instead are just playing themselves. Some find that they are utterly boring, besides letting idiots be idiots on screen is often entertaining enough for the masses.
That said, reality TV seems to be such a great entertainment source because it makes others feel better about themselves while humiliating others. However we also enjoy seeing others succeed and watching them in unreal situations under a lot of pressure. This is something that we do not want to experience ourselves. As to why it’s called reality TV? No idea, but there is little to nothing that reflects the reality of the everyday lives of most people and there seems to be as much surrealism as there is in fantasy.
