Martyrs
There are many people who have endured sufferings for a cause, such as Mahatma Gandhi, who campaign to lessening poverty and discrimination, improving women's rights, to unite different enthic and religious group,

Bodyguards
Bodyguards are known for dramatic leaps when the person they are protecting is shot at. They are paid but many take a bullet for their client out of loyalty especially in the cases of politics, like presidents.
Sacrifice in The Hunger Games
There are many occasions where Katniss and the other characters make sacrifices for other people.
The one of first examples, and one of the most important, of sacrifice from the book is when Katniss volenteers to take Prim's, her younger sister, place in the games. The reason behind her sacrifice is her love for her younger sister which
is shown by her devotion to looking after and protecting Prim. Katniss suffered great emotional distress when Prim's name was pulled out of the ballot, describing her reaction as like be winded after falling from a tree, "...trying
to remember to breathe, unable to speak, totally stunned...", this quote show the nature of her devotion towards protecting her sister and how a person is affect by knowing someone they love is going to most likely die or be harmed.
Her protective nature is shown by the way she stood infront of Prim and made her sacrifice of volenteering in Prim's place. This teaches us that people will sacrifice themselves for someone they love.

In the second chapter there was another case of sacrifice is when Katniss described her childhood encounter with her fellow District 12 competitor Peeta Mellark, when she, desperate to feed her family, was looking for food in the bins at the bakery and Peeta and his mother discovered her. Soon after she had been chased off, she heard crashing noises from the bakery
kitchen, then Peeta's mother hitting Peeta for buring some bread and him being ordered to feed the ruined loaves to the pigs. Instead of doing that, he gave the loaves to Katniss. Peeta suffered the blows from his mother so he could give
the loaves to Katniss, showing his nature of being a caring and selfless person like many sacrificing people and to show that he loves Katniss.
When Rue is killed, Katniss takes the time to "decorate her body in the flowers. Covering the ugly wound. Wreathing her face. Weaving her hair with bright colors". This shows Katniss's defiance to the Capitol, in the fact she shows that Rue isn't just another dead body from the hunger games, her song and the flowers shows how much Rue means and that this death was a huge sacrifice.
After Katniss honours Rues death, she recieves a gift, "This bread came from District 11... What
must it have cost the people of District 11 who can't even feed themselves?". In the poorer districts in Panem can hardly afford to feed themselves so to send Katniss this shows their gratitude for her actions. They are also showing Katniss their unity in opposing the Capitol cruel ruling. So not only are them sacrificing their money and food but also their sacrifice the assurance of their safety by supporting Katniss's act of rebellion.

When Katniss discovers she and Peeta can both survive, she immediately sets out to find him. When she discovers him life threatenly sick she nurses him back to health. She has to sacrifice her old way of surviving, sleeping in trees and avoiding spending to much time in one place, to help. By this time her feelings towards Peeta are changing and this is shown by her sacrifice of her habits to care for him.
When Katniss kisses Peeta she recieves a pot of broth from Haymitch. She realises Haymitch's trick, she would be rewarded for the acts of romance that enticed and ensnared sponsers. She sacrifices her relationship ties with Gale and her sacrifices her internal conflicts in order to get the essential parcels. These parcels are needed to help Peeta recover from blood poisoning and Katniss make the emotional sacrifice for him.
When Peeta is sick Katniss tells him of the story of Prim's goat. She had gone to the Hub and saw "One of the goats, a white one with black patches, was lying down in a cart. It was easy to see why. Something, probably a dog, had mauled her shoulder and infection had set in. It was bad, the Goat Man had to hold her up to milk her. But I thought I knew someone who could fix it"
The Goat Man was tryibng to sell the goat to the butcher but he wouldnt take it. Katniss bought and sabed the goat, so the sacrifice was averted. In this story Peeta is relating to the goat becuase if Katniss hadn't come to him he would have died, Katniss had saved him from the sacrifice of his life.

When Katniss and Peeta have defeated all the other tributes, they find out they cannot survive together anymore as the Capitol had taken back their offer of district partners being able to win the Games as a pair. As neither wanted to kill the other, they made a suicide pact. For Peeta, he was sacrificing himself for her and for Katniss, she was sacrificing her life as a last act of rebellion against the Capitol. Using the poisonous berries Katniss had they were prepared to do it, " I give Peeta's hand one last squeeze as a signal, as a good-bye, and we begin counting. 'One.' Maybe I'm wrong. 'Two.' Maybe they don't care if we both die. 'Three!' "
But before they could eat the berries, the Capitol intervenes and makes them both winners.
This act of sacrifice is so powerful becuase they would rather die than give into the Capitol's demands and become part of the barbaric show of the Hunger Games.
