Haymitch:
How Haymitch was created in the Hungergames:
Dialogue: you see certain aspects of Haymitches character in the dialougue in the book. like" heres some advice, stay alive!" you can see that at this moment Haymitch does not care much about Katniss and Peeta, he has no faith in them. Dialogue is very important to show Haymitches character because it shows his attitude towards the two.
Narrarator: Also what the narrarator (Katniss) says says about Haymitch definately shows what Haymitch is like. " as my mentor he gets control of my gifts from the sponsers. i know he hates me. he's made that clear enough." Katniss shows a lot of what Haymitch is like, ecspecially when talking about the two's realtionship. This Quote really shows what Haymitch is like and his attitude towards her and his attitude towards the games.
Actions: the actions and decisions that Haymitch makes again shows a lot about is character. " Peeta and I take in the scene of our mentor trying to rise out of the slippery vile stuff from his stomach". For the first few times that Peeta and Katniss met Haymitch he was very drunk, this obviously shows a bit about his character.
words to describe appearance: "Haymitch Abernathy ,a paunchy, middle aged man, who at the moment appears to be hollering unintelligible, staggers onto the stage, and falls into the third chair. he's drunk. very." In this quote you get a picture of Haymitch and it definately shows his character and how he does not look respectful. this is the first time you hear about Haymitch in the book, and it gives you an impression from the start of Haymitch of not being the best guy out.
Changes in Haymitch throughout the book:
Haymitch changes a lot during the novel. at the start he is very disrespectful towards everyone ecspecially Katniss and Peeta. you can see that he definately does not want to be their mentors and is far to drunk most of the time to give the two any decent advice. but once he realises that Katniss and Peeta are serious about winning this and are willing to try you see a change in his attitude, he starts to sober up a little and is willing to help them make fatel decisions before they have to compete in the hunger games. he ends up getting them quite a few sponsers and fans with the help of Effie Tricket. In the end he willingly gives a lot of help to Katniss and Peeta and without him i do not believe that they could have won it without him.
Choices, personality, relationships:
Haymitch definately made some importatnt decisions in the novel that really effected Katniss, like when Katniss was in high danger of dying of dehydration, Katniss knew that her sponsers would fly in some water for her, so she screamed out that she needed water but it didnt come, Haymitch had decided not to give her the water because she was so close to a water source, so she didn't waste the sponsers money on water. this was one of the many good decisions Haymitch made because then the sponsers money was spent on other very important things that were flew in later. Haymitch had a very strange personality though, he was very straight up and quite mean but he did care a lot about Katniss and Peeta in the end even though sometimes it didnt seem it. he is quite arrogant, but these are the many things that make Haymitch's character so good. the realtionship between him and Katniss really showed how similiar these two characters were. Haymitch and Katniss clashed a lot because they were so similiar in the things that they did and said. these two personalities were very important in the text because it really brings out eachothers personalities.
What Haymitch teaches us:
Haymitch really shows that anything is possible. the chances that Katniss and Peeta would win were very slim and i think that Haymitch made this possible for them. He also taught us that if you want to achieve something then you have to take it seriously. At the start of the novel Haymitch was very drunk most of the time and didn't really take Katniss and Peeta seriously and nothing was going right, it wasn't until Haymitch started to sober up that things started working out for them.
